There are different waxes for different jobs - soft paste waxes are absorbed into bare wooden surfaces and can carry colour into them as well. Soft waxes are lowbuild so a top coat of harder wax will increase the thickness on the surface and dry to a tougher finish. Wax filler sticks come in good range of colours and are fantastic for sorting out problem areas prior to waxing. Waxes are not water-proof as a rule so they are obvious limitations as to where they can be used. If you a not a drinks coaster type of person think about an alternative finish, such as an oil, for table tops.
