Translucent finishes are see-through and are therefore always influenced by the original colour of the wood they are painted onto. A new, lighter piece of wood (after a repair, say) covered with the same translucent colour as the surrounding old wood will still look lighter by much as it did before you over coated it. It takes a bit of flair and cunning to match the new wood in separately first and it can be quite tricky.
