You can use wire wool in a number of ways, to abrade a surface including metal, or even to apply a wax polish as it will clog less. Similarly it is useful when stripping for the same reasons. Typically wire wool is used over sandpaper in furniture restoration. One word of caution however, do not use it with oak as the steel can react with the wood and stain it.
