Painting metalwork can be tackled in two ways. A conventional trim finish system for wood and metal requires three layers: a primer, an undercoat and a top coat. A specialist system designed for metal requires only a metal primer and an appropriate top coat. Primers for ferrous metals have rust inhibiting ingredients. Non-ferrous metals normal require a primer formulated for good adhesion.
